Bongi Mbonambi expects Saturdayâs Vodacom URC clash in Cape Town to be decided where South African derbies usually are â up front.
The 14th-placed Sharks are seeking their first away URC win against the Stormers in five attempts against a log-leading Stormers team that has won its first eight matches.
âItâs a traditional South African derby,â the Bok hooker said on Tuesday. âEveryone knows itâs going to be physical â two quality sides going at each other for the full 80 minutes.
âThe Stormers are performing well this season in both competitions [URC and Investec Champions Cup]. Theyâve got depth, theyâre well coached, and theyâve got a good squad.
âIt comes down to the prep you do in the week and then the execution on the day. We put a lot of work into our scrum, our mauling and our forwards play, and Iâm sure they do the same.â
HISTORY: Stormers boss Sharks in Cape Town
Stopping the Stormersâ powerful maul, one of their standout weapons this season, will be central to that plan.
âThe whole of South Africa knows how good their maul is. Itâs not just this season â theyâve done it in past seasons as well,â said Mbonambi. âFor us, itâs about getting our detail right, doing our homework, watching the clips and making sure everyone knows their role. We also believe strongly in our own mauling game.â
Mbonambi praised interim coach JP Pietersenâs impact on the Sharks since taking over in December, but admitted the team hasnât yet performed to to its full potential.
âWe are starting to connect well. Credit to Coach JP. Heâs trying to build depth and give the youngsters game time in big matches,â he said. âChoosing between two teams gives you an advantage, but itâs up to us as players to back the plan and work together.â
ALSO: De Villiers much more than a ball scavenger
As one of the senior figures in the squad, Mbonambi sees his role as keeping the group aligned.
âItâs about making sure everyone buys into what the coaches want and that the youngsters donât feel all the pressure. Rugby is a squad effort.â
The 35-year-oldâs competitive fire still burns.
âWhat drives me is my competitive edge and my love for the game. Once you lose that sense of care, youâll know it first â and thatâs when you know itâs time to get off the dancefloor.â
