Ivan van Rooyen lauded Lions centurion Morné van den Berg after their 54-17 win over Edinburgh at Ellis Park.
The coach said the Springbok scrumhalfâs performance embodied what the Joburg-based club is building.
âHeâs that Lions guy,â Van Rooyen said. âKrappie came through all the systems, didnât have a contract, worked his socks off to get a contract, didnât make the team initially, then went to the bench. Today heâs got Springbok caps.â
Van Rooyen emphasised that Van den Bergâs role goes beyond individual contribution.
âHeâs a great team guy, with character, and willing to fight for every inch for the team,â he said. âHe keeps everyone honest with his work rate and the small things.
âWe just had a moment after the match where he said, âThank you for giving me each and every one of those 100 caps,ââ he said. âAnd then he said, âHopefully thereâs 100 more.ââ

The performance itself reinforced the Lionsâ recent progress, but captain Francke Horn pointed to the efforts behind their attacking execution.
âWe scored some unbelievable tries today. But that comes from hard work,â Horn said. âItâs not just scoring, itâs being there, playing off each other.
âWe said we need to back up the performances because the race for the top eight is so tight we have to keep on building and building,â he added.

Despite lifting the SA Shield, Van Rooyen made it clear the focus has already shifted forward f0r the Lions, who remain seventh on the log.
âWe wonât get ahead of ourselves,â he said. âI can promise you Monday morning wonât really be about that. Every ounce of energy, every ounce of focus is going into the Dragons [on Saturday].â
